In an effort to accelerate advanced materials discovery and deployment, ASM International—the society dedicated to serving the materials science and engineering community by providing authoritative information—has founded the Computational Materials Data Network. Nexight Group has been selected to support the start-up and launch of the network, which will serve as the central point for the collection, dissemination, and management of materials data.
The launch of the Computational Materials Data Network is a direct response to the U.S. Materials Genome Initiative, which aims to provide the materials innovation infrastructure needed to develop and deploy materials for medical, transportation, and national security applications twice as fast and at a fraction of the cost required now. The Computational Materials Data Network will make data available to advance these critical applications as well as integrated computational materials engineering (ICME), a transformational discipline in the materials science and engineering field.
“Effective data sharing is at the heart of the Materials Genome Initiative and presents an incredibly complex challenge,” said Ross Brindle, Nexight Group Executive Vice President. “The Computational Materials Data Network will become a vital resource for sharing data and accelerating materials development and deployment.”
The Computational Materials Data Network is currently organizing teams of experts to explore pilot projects in manufacturing in-process materials data, aerospace structural materials data, and a national materials research database. Nexight will support the Computational Materials Data Network in its initial stages by providing planning, facilitation, business planning, branding, and awareness building.
“Nexight Group has proven skills in addressing technical challenges by fostering collaboration among stakeholders and helping them to identify, prioritize, and drive toward solutions,” said Thomas S. Passek, ASM International Managing Director. “We are pleased to work with them on the launch of this important new initiative.”
“I commend ASM for its leadership on behalf of the materials science and engineering community,” said Warren Hunt, FASM, Nexight Group Chief Technical Officer. “We are excited to help build and grow the Computational Materials Data Network into a valued resource for the nation’s industry and research communities.”
