Nexight Group

Nexight Group is happy to welcome Mariko Hewer to the team as our new Communications and Research Analyst. Mariko graduated from the University of Maryland with a BA in Journalism, and comes to us with more than six years of experience as a writer and editor. We sat down with Mariko to ask her a few questions about herself, her views, and her new role at Nexight.

Tell us a little about yourself.
I have a background in print journalism and have worked as a writer and editor in both the Business 2 Business and nonprofit sectors. Although I enjoyed both experiences, what piqued my interest most was the ability to make a difference—either individually or on a team—and engage with my audience in a meaningful way. I believe that every person, no matter what their role is, has something valuable to contribute to a collaborative effort.

Outside of work I can be found reading, exploring Washington, D.C., and watching superhero movies.

Why did you decide to join Nexight Group?
The thing that attracted me most about Nexight is their broad variety of projects. I saw an opportunity to support various undertakings while continuing to hone my skills as a writer and editor.

I also was excited to work in an environment that prides itself on being collaborative. During my brief time at Nexight so far, I have worked on three projects, each of which presented different challenges and rewards. I strongly believe in the mantra that two pairs of eyes are better than one, and I look forward to continuing to work with my colleagues in differing capacities.

How does your background in print journalism translate to your role at Nexight Group?
One of the most important things I learned during my time at the University of Maryland is that mistakes are unacceptable in journalism. I was trained to double check my work, meticulously edit documents, and generally ensure that any material I produced was exceptional. I hope to bring these same skills to bear on my work at Nexight.

What are you most looking forward to about your new role?
I am excited about the chance to form unique connections while helping my colleagues on many different projects. I love being part of a hard-working, energized, detail-oriented group and hope to both support my teammates and improve my own abilities as I learn and grow at Nexight.
