Visual Communications Analyst

Nexight Group is seeking a creative, critical thinker and problem-solving graphic designer with the proven ability to analyze complex information and communicate the results through a range of compelling print and digital visual products. The ideal Visual Communications Analyst will translate complex concepts into visualizations that resonate with specific audiences, structure layouts that organize content into clear and compelling narrative arguments, and apply visual elements with intention. In this role you will participate in early-stage concept meetings with colleagues and clients, identify the needs being expressed, ask targeted clarifying questions, and provide thoughtful insight in real time that helps define and shape the end product. You will apply both basic design principles and visual creativity to craft fresh, modern-looking products that align with client branding guidelines and push the boundaries of what Nexight offers.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

Applicants should have the necessary skills to perform the following job responsibilities:

  • Conceptualize and design a range of modern-looking communication materials including fact sheets, reports, presentations, infographics, and digital products for specific target audiences.
  • Actively participate, listen, and provide real-time strategic advice on visualization and design choices in concept meetings with Nexight staff and clients, usually as an integral part of the project team.
  • Rapidly build an understanding of both target audiences and specialized, highly technical information in new subject areas and translate that understanding into compelling visual products with clear, logical structure and flow.
  • Express complex concepts in creative and accurate ways and apply graphic design principles to produce clean, fresh products that exceed client expectations.
  • Edit content and design drafts of communication materials to eliminate errors.
  • Contribute to Nexight Group marketing efforts via the development of website content, promotional materials, and social media content.
  • Thrive in a challenging and exciting, deadline-oriented environment while successfully managing multiple, simultaneous workstreams.
  • Demonstrate excellent written and verbal communications skills.

Working Conditions/Physical Demands

Nexight’s offices are in Silver Spring, MD. The position is open to in-person, remote, or hybrid candidates. Candidates must be willing to travel to the Washington, D.C. area occasionally to support clients. Applicants should expect to travel to Nexight’s offices at least once per quarter.

This is a primarily sedentary position in an environmentally controlled office setting, although moving between work areas may be required. Manipulating a computer keyboard or mouse and operating standard office equipment is typically required for this position. Summary of Qualifications

Minimum

  • Bachelor’s degree in graphic design, visual communications, English, journalism, or other related discipline
  • 1–3 years of professional experience
  • Strong eye for design, aesthetics, and visual composition
  • In-depth knowledge of design principles and how to apply them
  • Demonstrated professional experience interpreting and translating highly technical information and original concepts into visual presentations and illustrative materials (e.g., infographics and strategic publications)
  • Demonstrated experience developing clear, modern graphics and document layouts that are focused on driving target audiences to take specific action
  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Cloud software (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop)
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office programs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Adaptability to changes in direction, project types, subject matter, and workload
  • Meticulous attention to detail, copyediting skills, and comfort applying design principles to recommendations for layout and format improvement
  • Ability to think critically and work well in both independent and team-based environments
  • An entrepreneurial, “roll up your sleeves” spirit that realizes value in all tasks, large and small, likes to learn by doing, and desires continuous improvement and innovation
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to receive a Public Trust Clearance
  • Must submit a portfolio consisting of an infographic, report layout design and digital design

Preferred

  • Experience with any of the following:
    • Data visualization and interactive graphic design
    • Animation and/or video production
    • Web design and content management systems
    • Writing and editing outreach materials and messages
    • Marketing and branding strategy
  • Professional experience in a consulting or other professional services environment
  • Interest and/or experience in technical topics such as energy, climate change, infrastructure security and resilience, cyber security, public health, and materials and manufacturing innovation
  • Experience conducting stakeholder consultations via interviews, focus groups, or facilitated workshops
  • Experience driving diverse groups of stakeholders towards consensus on complex topics
Compensation and Benefits

The salary range for this role takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to skill sets; experience and training; licensure and certifications; and other business and organizational needs. A reasonable estimate of the current range is $50,000 to $70,000.
